Rime of the Ancient Mariner Mug

Rime of the Ancient Mariner Mug

£9.40Price

Literary mugs, that celebrate my love of books and their illustrations! This time I present:

"The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" mug. The poem by S.M. Coleridge is perhaps one of the best known poems that people have never heard or read... "water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink" is perhaps the most familiar line... My own first meeting with Coleridge was down to Iron Maiden's take on "The Rime..."

The poem is an allegory, and tells the tale of the mariner, who due to his own actions is cursed by Life-in-Death to wander the oceans and lands forever, to share his tale, punished for his ignorance and arrogance of man over the wonders of nature he saw all around him. Or at least, that's my interpretation.

The image on this mug show Death and Life-in-Death playing dice for the crew, from 'The Blue Poetry Book', Edited by Andrew Lang & illustrations by H. J. Ford and Lancelot Speed.
